91 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 V8?

My friend is wanting to sell a Ford mustang... I was thinking about buying it but i would like to know a few things from another source before putting in the investment.

This would be my first car so i dont want it to be a total piece of shit lol..

Its is a..

1991 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 V8
150k Miles
New tires
ok paint job...

Asking $4,000

My Most concern if i dont know at about what milage these mustang usually break down...

I am a total novice with anything concerning cars lol but it is my understanding that what holds the miles is the motor... i called my local junk yard and they have an engine for this car for $350 that has 56k miles.

Would it be worth it to buy this car and buy the new engine or just buy the car or not buy it at all??

Please link some sort of Forum or Webpage backing up your facts..

Thank you all

on a 302 motor aka 5. 0 i would make sure you change the timing chain and make syure the egr vavle works. take the car to a mechanic and have him look at the motor and give you his opinion. on the motor and rest of the drive train. if you feel up to is swap the motor later on with that one from the junk yard but you never know whats wrong with a junk yard motor unless you take it apart. you can buy thr car and the junk yard motor and rebuild the junk yard motor in the mean time just baby the 150k motor

Never buy a car from a friend. Something will happen and your friendship will be at least fractured and maybe even lost. Do you want to lose your friendship over a car? The risk probability is very high. What ever you do I wish you luck.

If the car runs fine, why are you looking at new engines (especially if you are a self-proclaimed novice)?

Ask your friend how well it was maintained. How often was the oil changed? They should say ever 3-5k miles or 3 months (whichever came first). Test drive the car. If you feel any kind of shaking or wobbling, that is bad. If the engine clicks or just sounds funny, don’t buy it. Even if the car is loaded and in excellent condition, it won’t be worth much more than $3k so the price is a bit high. Being an older car, it is more prone to reliability issues than a newer car but there is no set range for problems.

Also, I would generally say a Mustang is not a good first car. They aren’t that good on gas (especially the V8) and murder to insure. They also aren’t the easiest cars to drive (I am assuming you are a relatively newer driver as well).

i think 4000 is too much for that many miles and year. it is up to you, but it could very well have problems. It depends on how it was driven but you also have to realize that after this many years and miles, there will be problems. Don’t expect to drive without repairs. I have a 92 tbird 5. 0L HO and the engine has been great with 187000 miles on it. Body is bad but wheel bearings in both rear wheels have been replaced recently and the brakes have been rebuilt.

This Ford has too many miles for the price. The junkyard engine might not be any good either- you can’t tell it’s complete history from the stated miles on it. You can buy the car and the extra engine if you want them that bad, but I suggest you take the extra engine to a machinist and have it rebuilt so you know absolutely what condition it’s in. You also could skip that trouble and buy a freshly rebuilt engine. The only problem remaining will be getting the old one out, when it needs replacing, and the new one in. There’s a lot of money involved, however you look at it. You can get a better car for the money.

okay i owned an 82 5. 0ho and had just shy of 300,000 and it screamed, of course the engine had been modded when i got it, i only put 100,000 on it and the man i bought it from around 75,000. it would wheelie. i didnt stop the mods, but repaired it when it had the slightest trouble. remember its a hobby car, and the price aint that high, drive it if it makes you smile buy it, then go to mustangworks message board, youll be home. mustangworks. com

The mileage is too high and an OK paint job just doesn’t cut it. You can also bet that a GT 5. 0 has been riden hard and probably has other problems. I suggest you don’t buy it. See kellybluebook. com.
