My opinion?
A ’68 Mustang with a 454 is worth about half of what a ’68 Mustang with a 428 is worth.

It is your ride but since you asked the 68 fastback is a rare mustang if you are going to replace the engine why not keep it a Ford, the weight and width of the 428 is not far from a 385 series engine like the 460 or 429, the 460′s are very easy to come by and the 429′s are still out there to be had they are a modern style engine and parts are plentiful, most 460′s had low compression,if you put in a set of flat tops and a set of early model heads say 1970 to 1972 460 or 1968 to 1972 429 heads these engines make a ton of torque and lots of horse power and you will still have the big block cool factor, what ever you decide it will still be fun to drive, good luck.

why not go with a FORD 460, they can be stroked out to over 540 ci. . . and you can keep the distributor in the front ! or you can always get one of the new 427 Windsors, they are very popular in moded cars. .

My friend has a 69 Mustang
S code 390 that looks stock, but it’s stroked out to 490 and it whips on the 427W’s !

Oh, and it’s very wrong to put a Chevy in a early Mustang. . . Only a Ford hater would do it for spite. .

it would be like putting a Ford engine in a Z28, there, I said it!

Why not go with a big block Ford crate engine? It will be a lot easier to get in (no issues with exhaust routing, transmissions adapters, motor mounts, wiring, etc. ). You will maintain more of the value of the car by keeping it Ford, and you can always keep looking for a 428CJ. Not to mention, you can buy more horsepower in a warranted crate engine than any 454 that you’re likely to find.
